About Inner Anatomy
Inner Anatomy is a free, interactive 3D atlas of the human brain, with study guides for students and anyone curious about how the brain works.
What you can do here
- Explore a real brain in 3D. Fly into any part, from the lobes down to living tissue, a single neuron and one of its synapses.
- Study for your course or exam. Study guides follow official outlines such as the MCAT and AP Psychology, and topic pages explain one subject at a time, each with a quick quiz.
- Learn and remember. Short lessons, quizzes, and a daily review that brings questions back just before you would forget them.
- Look anything up. A page for every part of the brain, in plain words, with its sources.
Who it is for
Students of psychology, biology, medicine, nursing and neuroscience, teachers who want to show the brain in class, and anyone who has ever wondered what is going on inside their own head.
How the 3D brain is made
The brain is rebuilt from open research atlases made from MRI scans of real people, mainly FreeSurfer's average adult brain (fsaverage) and the CIT168 atlas of deep brain nuclei, used under their licenses. Parts those atlases don't include, such as the nuclei of the thalamus and the fields of the hippocampus, are drawn by us following standard anatomy texts, so their borders are approximate. How we check our facts
Every page is written in plain words and checked, claim by claim, against published sources: open textbooks such as OpenStax, medical references on the NCBI Bookshelf, and peer-reviewed research. Each page lists the sources it was checked against, and ideas that scientists still debate are called theories. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.
Free, with no ads
Everything on Inner Anatomy is free to use. There are no ads and no tracking, and we never sell data: our privacy policy explains what little we keep. You don't need an account, and if you want your progress on all your devices, you can save it with a passkey.
What's next
The brain is our first stop. We plan to add the rest of the body, organ by organ.
