Inner Anatomy is built on open scientific data and open-source software. Each source allows its use here, as long as it is credited and its terms travel with it.

CIT168 subcortical atlas

The two parts of the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, subthalamic nucleus, VTA, hypothalamus, mammillary bodies and habenula.

All of the data above has been changed for the app: resampled into one brain, turned into 3D meshes, smoothed and compressed.

Drawn by us

The thalamic nuclei, hippocampal fields, amygdala nuclei, cerebellar lobes and vermis, locus coeruleus, raphe nuclei, corpus callosum, fornix, fiber tracts and Brodmann areas are drawn by Inner Anatomy inside the fsaverage brain, following standard anatomy texts. Their borders are approximate. Nerves, glands and cells are modeled by hand.

Sources of the facts

Each page lists, at its end, the sources its facts were checked against: open textbooks, medical references and peer-reviewed research.

Software and fonts

Inner Anatomy runs on open-source software, including three.js, React and meshoptimizer, and uses the Inter, Sora and Fraunces fonts. Read every license, and the FreeSurfer license in full.
