Lesson 2 of 13 · about 4 minutes
The hidden cortex
Insula, cingulate and the inner surfaces.

In the 3D app, the brain flies to each part as you read, and 2 quick questions at the end help it stick. Here is the whole lesson to read.
- 1
The insula: a lobe in hiding
Pull apart the side of the brain and you find the insula, folded deep inside. It senses the inside of your body: heartbeat, hunger, pain and disgust.

- 2
The cingulate: a collar of cortex
On the inner surface, the cingulate cortex wraps around the corpus callosum like a collar. It links emotion and attention, and notices when something goes wrong.

The precuneus
Also on the inner surface, the precuneus helps you replay memories as scenes and picture yourself in other places.

The doorway to memory
On the inner side of the temporal lobe, the entorhinal cortex is the main doorway into the hippocampus. It is one of the first places Alzheimer's disease strikes.
