Anterior nucleus of the thalamus

The anterior nucleus sits at the very front tip of the thalamus. It is a key stop on a memory loop called the Papez circuit: signals flow from the hippocampus to the mammillary bodies, then to the anterior thalamus, then to the cingulate cortex and back. It helps you form new memories and keep track of where you are.

At the front and top of the thalamus, just under the floor of the lateral ventricle.

When it goes wrong
Korsakoff syndrome
A severe lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine), often linked to heavy drinking, can damage this memory loop and cause deep trouble forming new memories.

- James Papez proposed his famous loop in 1937 as the brain's circuit for emotion. Today it is also known for its role in memory.
Where the name comes from
"Anterior" is Latin for "more in front", because it sits at the front of the thalamus.
